Fighting Sexual Violence Stigma in Estonia

A European Union-wide survey conducted among over 40,000 Estonian women in 2014 revealed that 13% of women over the age of 15 have experienced sexual violence (Wright, 2020) at least once in their lives. That’s one in every eight women in Estonia. Let that sink in. In the last decade, the number of reported sexual crimes has continued to rise, reaching a total of 731 cases in 2023, according to the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) (Nael, 2024). The problem is growing, yet we’re still not talking about it. Are we afraid? What are we waiting for? It’s time to BE LOUD.

Data Protection and Privacy Challenges of Refugees in the Digital Age

In a rapidly globalising world, the flow of migration is increasing. Many people are on the move due to several reasons such as conflicts, economic reasons, instability, and environmental factors, and an unprecedented number of people are fleeing from wars, conflicts, and instability to the places where they seek basic human necessities (Molnar, 2019). Technological innovations have brought novel techniques in migration management and not only States but also International Organisations have started to use new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, machine learning systems, and biometrics to exercise control over migrant populations (Hayes, 2017). Hayes further explains that refugees and asylum seekers are asked to give their biometrics such as iris and fingerprint scans to access food and necessities.
