Fighting Sexual Violence Stigma in Estonia
A European Union-wide survey conducted among over 40,000 Estonian women in 2014 revealed that 13% of women over the age of 15 have experienced sexual violence (Wright, 2020) at least once in their lives. That’sĀ one in every eight women in Estonia. Let that sink in. In the last decade, the number of reported sexual crimes has continued to rise, reaching a total of 731 cases in 2023, according to the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) (Nael, 2024). The problem is growing, yet we’re still not talking about it. Are we afraid? What are we waiting for? It’s time to BE LOUD.
